With six gates to choose from, the attacker always has an option, so the duel is about reading the defender and changing direction towards a free gate. Because roles swap the moment the ball is won, players also practise the reaction after losing the ball. Several pairs play at the same time, which adds traffic and forces players to look up.

Objective

Beat a defender in 1v1 by changing direction towards free space, and react quickly when possession changes.

Organisation

  • 20 × 20 m area with six gates (2 m wide) spread around.
  • Players in pairs: one attacker with a ball, one defender.
  • Up to four pairs in the same area.

How it works

  1. The attacker scores a point by dribbling through any gate (from either side).
  2. They cannot score through the same gate twice in a row.
  3. If the defender wins the ball, they become the attacker immediately.
  4. Play 45-second rounds, then rest while other pairs play or change partners.

Coaching points

  • Attacker: head up to see which gates are free, then attack the one the defender is not protecting.
  • Use body feints and quick changes of direction when the defender commits.
  • After going through a gate, turn quickly and look for the next one.
  • Defender: stay between the attacker and the nearest gate; do not dive in.

Progressions

  • Fewer gates.
  • Points count double if you go through the gate with your weaker foot.

Regressions

  • Wider gates (3 m).
  • Defender must hold a bib in each hand (makes tackling harder).

Variations

  • 2v2 with the same rules for older groups.

Key principles

  • Go where the defender isn't.
  • React to losing the ball.
  • Scan while dribbling.

    Sharks and Minnows

Minnows dribble across the 'ocean' without losing their ball to the sharks in the middle. Caught minnows become sharks. A classic dribbling game for kids.
