The 2v1 is the simplest overload and the clearest way to teach the key attacking decision: pass or dribble. If the defender stays with the ball carrier, the pass to the teammate is on; if the defender drops off to cover the pass, the ball carrier can drive forward and shoot. Short, fast repetitions give every player many decisions and many shots.
Objective
Recognise whether to pass or dribble in a 2v1, and finish the attack quickly.
Organisation
- Full-size goal with a goalkeeper; start line 30 m from goal.
- Attackers in two queues on the start line, 11 m apart. Defenders queue at the edge of the box.
How it works
- The first attacker in the left queue dribbles forward; the attacker from the right queue supports.
- One defender steps out from the edge of the box to defend.
- The attackers have 10 seconds to score.
- If the defender wins the ball, they score by passing into a mini goal or to the coach on the start line.
- Rotate: attacker → defender → back of the attacking queue. Swap queues so everyone plays both sides.
Coaching points
- Ball carrier: dribble at the defender to make them commit to you.
- Release the pass when the defender commits, not before and not too late.
- Support player: stay wide and slightly behind the ball to avoid offside and keep the angle open.
- If the defender covers the pass, keep dribbling and shoot.
- Defender: delay, stay between the two attackers and force the ball carrier to decide early.
Progressions
- A second defender chases from behind after 3 seconds (2v1 becomes 2v2).
- Attack must end within 6 seconds.
Regressions
- The defender must start 5 m further back.
- The defender is passive for the first rounds.
Variations
- 3v2 with the same structure for older groups.
Key principles
- Commit the defender.
- Timing of the pass.
- Width creates the overload.
