Ball mastery is the foundation of confident young players. With one ball each, every child gets hundreds of touches in ten minutes. The coach calls a technique, demonstrates it quickly, and the players repeat it while moving around the grid — so they also learn to look up and avoid each other.
Objective
Develop close control with both feet and all surfaces while moving, looking up and changing direction.
Organisation
- 20 × 20 m grid (smaller for U6–U8), one ball per player.
- The coach stands at the side where everyone can see the demonstrations.
How it works
- Players dribble freely inside the grid.
- The coach calls a technique for 30–45 seconds: sole rolls, inside–outside, drag-backs, step-overs, Cruyff turns.
- On 'Turn!' players change direction with the last technique practised.
- On 'Stop!' players stop the ball with the sole and freeze; the last one does five toe taps.
- Short breaks every 2 minutes for dynamic stretches.
Coaching points
- Small touches: keep the ball close, within one step.
- Use both feet — switch foot every time the coach says 'Change!'.
- Head up between touches to avoid other players.
- Bend your knees and stay on the balls of your feet.
Progressions
- Shrink the grid so there is less space.
- Add two players without a ball who try to touch the other players' balls.
- Speed changes: slow dribble, then explode for three touches on the coach's clap.
Regressions
- Walking pace at first.
- One technique per session only.
Variations
- Mirror game in pairs: one leads, the other copies the moves.
Key principles
- Many touches.
- Both feet.
- Head up.
