Wall players keep the 2v2 flowing and give the attacking pair constant support, so they can practise one-twos, overlaps and switches. Defenders, on the other hand, must learn to work as a pair: one presses the ball while the other covers the space and the passing line. It is intense, so rotate the central players often.

Objective

Attack: combine with a partner and the wall players to reach the end target. Defence: press and cover as a pair.

Organisation

  • 20 × 15 m area. Two end wall players (E) and two side wall players (S) on the lines.
  • Two pairs in the middle in different bibs.

How it works

  1. A pair scores by passing to the end player they attack, who returns the ball to them to continue attacking the other end.
  2. Side wall players play with the team in possession (two touches).
  3. End players may not pass to each other.
  4. Pairs play 90 seconds, then swap with the wall players.

Coaching points

  • Attack: one player shows short, the other stays further away to stretch the defenders.
  • Use the wall players to escape pressure, then move to receive the return.
  • Defence: first defender presses the ball, second defender covers at an angle behind.
  • Defence: communicate — 'I press', 'I cover'.

Progressions

  • Side wall players have one touch.
  • End players can also score by shooting into a mini goal behind them.

Regressions

  • Side wall players have unlimited touches.
  • Enlarge the area to 25 × 20 m.

Variations

  • 3v3 with the same wall players for 12 players.

Key principles

  • Support and width.
  • Pressure and cover.
  • Play forward when you can.
